“Winning doesn’t always mean being first. Winning means you’re doing better than you’ve ever done before.” (Bonnie Blair) While speed skater Blair was an Olympic medal winner, her focus was on something other than the gold. While she’s proud of her medals, she concentrates on improving herself rather than on beating others. Life would go better for many of us if we’d focus on “self-improving,” rather than on what others are doing. What can you do better today than you’ve ever done before? 😉  Jack

Sports often provide great analogies and examples of points that we are trying to make. In today’s example the sport of track and field provides a great example. Many times when you are watching a race unfold and come to a conclusion the commentator may make the point that even though a specific competitor didn’t win the race, they set a new personal best for themselves and you can see them celebrating that achievement.

Maybe your goal should be to be a better person than you’ve ever been before. That goal can take on many dimensions. I pray each night to be more patient, more understanding, more sympathetic and more helpful tomorrow than I was today. I don’t always achieve that goal, but I keep praying and keep trying.

What goals do you set for yourself each day? Are you making progress on them? Are you a better person today than you were yesterday? What’s your goal for tomorrow? Maybe you can achieve a new personal best. Then you will be a winner, too.
